Widespread colonization of the lung by Tropheryma whipplei in HIV infection.
RATIONALE Lung infections caused by opportunistic or virulent pathogens are a principal cause of morbidity and mortality in HIV infection. It is unknown whether HIV infection leads to changes in basal lung microflora, which may contribute to chronic pulmonary complications that increasingly are being recognized in individuals infected with HIV. OBJECTIVES To determine whether the immunodefici...
متن کاملLong polar fimbriae contribute to colonization by Escherichia coli O157:H7 in vivo.
The contribution of long polar fimbriae to intestinal colonization by Escherichia coli O157:H7 was evaluated in sheep, conventional pigs, and gnotobiotic piglets. E. coli O157:H7 strains with lpfA1 and lpfA2 mutated were recovered in significantly lower numbers and caused fewer attachment and effacement lesions than the parent strain.
متن کاملOrigins, colonization, and lineage recombination in a widespread perennial soybean polyploid complex.
Polyploidy is a dominant feature of flowering plant genomes, including those of many important crop species, implying that polyploidy confers evolutionary advantages on plant species. Recent molecular studies suggest that polyploids often originate many times from the same progenitor diploids. For this to provide a broader genetic base for a polyploid species, there must be lineage recombinatio...
متن کاملWidespread impact of horizontal gene transfer on plant colonization of land
In complex multicellular eukaryotes such as animals and plants, horizontal gene transfer is commonly considered rare with very limited evolutionary significance. Here we show that horizontal gene transfer is a dynamic process occurring frequently in the early evolution of land plants. Our genome analyses of the moss Physcomitrella patens identified 57 families of nuclear genes that were acquire...
متن کاملGenomic evidence of geographically widespread effect of gene flow from polar bears into brown bears
Polar bears are an arctic, marine adapted species that is closely related to brown bears. Genome analyses have shown that polar bears are distinct and genetically homogeneous in comparison to brown bears. However, these analyses have also revealed a remarkable episode of polar bear gene flow into the population of brown bears that colonized the Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof islands (ABC isla...
